Year 11 student Demi Schaper recently participated in the 2023 Premier’s Spirit of Democracy tour in Canberra.
The study tour aims to educate and inform students about the origins of democracy and support them in developing deeper knowledge and appreciation of the influence of democracy in Australia. It also develops an understanding of the role ancient Greece has played in establishing democratic values.
Demi said that she was one of 22 students in years 10-12 from government, catholic and independent schools from across the state of Victoria to be selected.
“We spent three days in Melbourne exploring the Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture, the Parliament of Victoria, Big Issue Classroom, and the National Gallery of Victoria,” she said.
“We were then lucky enough to fly to Australia’s capital city of Canberra where we visited places such as Parliament House, High Court, and the Australian War Memorial.”
“The study tour has helped strengthen my understanding of democracy, where I have gained an understanding on how I can be an active and informed citizen who participates in and sustains Australia’s democracy, speaking up for what I believe in, and acting where needed. “
As part of the study tour Demi was able to investigate political and legal systems, where she built on her knowledge and skills to question, understand and contribute to the world that we live in.
“Overall, it was an amazing experience that I will always remember,” she said.
