At Damascus College, we are committed to providing quality education, in which each individual child is encouraged to maximise their potential, in all of their endeavours, by being the best they can be.

The following information aims to assist parents and guide students on their pathways and subject selections. We hope the information below will ignite conversations between parent, student and their teachers so that decisions made are in the best interest of the students' academic pathway.

Handbooks have been created for Year 9, Year 10, and Senior students to assist with subject selection for Damascus students. The handbooks are provided as a flippable book that you can browse, or you can choose to download the interactive pdf. The form/s have also been provided as a pdf that you can download and complete.

Pathways Videos

The Years 7 and 8 Academic Program focuses on developing students’ skills and knowledge in the core areas of the curriculum, and encourages participation in the many extra-curricular activities at the College.

In Year 7, the following core subjects are taken by all students:

  • Religious Education
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Humanities
  • Science
  • Physical Education / Health
  • Design and Technology - Food, Textiles, Wood, Metal
  • Visual and Performing Arts - Art, Visual Communication, Drama, Music
  • Languages ** - French, Indonesian

In Year 8, the following core subjects are taken by all students:

More about the core subjects

Religious Education - The Religious Education program allows students to explore their own spirituality and identity within the rich context of the Catholic faith tradition.

English - The English program is designed to stimulate and develop the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills of all students while acknowledging the needs of each as an individual.

Mathematics - The Mathematics program is designed to strengthen the numeracy skills of students and to develop an abstract and conceptual understanding of Mathematics, which will assist them in their later years of both study and life.

Humanities - Humanities aims to develop in students an understanding of society. Humanities includes the study of history, geography and commerce.

Science - The Science program aims to build a conceptual and experiential understanding of Science by demonstrating the ways in which concepts, theories and models of science are used throughout society. Practical work is an integral part of the learning process in Years 7 and 8.

Physical Education - The Physical Education Health and Sports program focuses on correct skill development, group and team co-operation, personal fitness and health.

Performing Arts - The Performing Arts program introduces students to both Music and Drama. Quality instrumental tuition is also available in many disciplines.

Visual Arts - This program has been designed to introduce students to Visual Arts and to give them the confidence and expertise to develop their artistic and creative potential.

Design & Technology - Design & Technology studies aim to introduce, develop and fulfil each student’s potential through direct experience and skill development in a broad range of practical studies including Textiles, Food, Wood and Metal.

Library - In Year 7, students are introduced to research processes using a variety of sources. They are guided towards Information Literacy including effective use of the Internet. All students participate in a Reading for Fun program.

Subject Selection Key Dates and Process

The Pathways and Subject Selection process involves a number of steps. These steps are listed below.

All subject selection and preferences will be finalised 1st week of September.

Possible Futures: Careers and Pathways information:

  • TA groups will discuss with students goals, careers and pathway options.
Students will participate in:
  • Making elective preference choices in draft form over the holidays.
  • Students in Year 8-11 attending the Subject Selection Expo
  • Completing the pathways and subject preference form (Year 10 into 11) and/or subject preference form (Year 8 into 9 and 9 into 10).
  • Complete all Application Forms and submit to relevant coordinators

Subject preference form is due prior to TA interviews scheduled for early Term 3:

  • TA Interviews
  • Students will need to have their draft subject selection form cited by their parents/guardians and TA's before they are allowed to enter their preferences online.

Interviews (acceleration):

  • Students currently in Year 9 can apply for acceleration in VET or a VCE study if they meet the criteria. An interview will be conducted post-application and when students have entered their preferences.
  • These interviews take place after students have entered their preferences and will include parents and student
