Throughout the year, the Damascus College Transition Coordinator will visit the schools which our students are coming from, to gain additional information and insights about the student. In some instances the coordinator meets with the student and teachers or just the teachers. In October/November there are additional transition sessions held for students from small Primary Schools or for students with special or additional needs, who may be particularly anxious about starting secondary school.
French and Indonesian are the two language choices at Damascus College, which is compulsory for Year 7 and 8. Students can continue with the language in senior years if they wish to do so. Students must submit their language choice in August the year prior to commencement and at this time special requests can be made but not always accommodated, for class placement.
On the first weekend in Term 4, incoming students attend a testing morning to ascertain literacy and numeracy levels, which helps Damascus to address student needs. The test is nothing to be anxious about, it simply assists us to provide for each student's needs which may be at varying levels.
In November or December we hold an Orientation day for all incoming Year 7 students, where they find out their House, Teacher Advisor Group, Class Group and spend the day with the rest of the Year 7 cohort.
